Hemp: uses in the textile industry and the spinning of the raw fiber

Hemp spinning process: from cultivation to fiber preparation, the processing steps are a summation of risks

Fiber slection for hemp spinning

Hemp is a liberian fiber that can be sourced from the stem of the plant. After the scutching and water retting phases, next comes the cleaning stage that is needed before any tentative spin. A careful process of different carding sorting takes place, dividing the longer fibers from the shorter ones. The shorter ones should be dismissed by the yarning process – and proceed for paper production and for the building industry.

The spinning of 100% hemp fiber

Al shearing step to achieve uniform lengths and then further inspection and eventual removal of any woody residue that may have remained despite the previous steps.
To be considered in this last step is the presence of suitable and ideal humidity for the process.
The experimental hemp spinning process that Prototipo Studio is coordinating is based on a 100% hemp fiber undergoing a retting process in a prototype bioreactor in Northern Italy. Operations are led by Marco Baroncini at Lanatura Filati factory site.
